length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

A comfortable story about AI and creativity that I kept repeating to any colleague I met along the way was: AI does not have to replace humans. The best results don’t come from just pushing a button and going to sleep, but by active collaboration. Why can we build skyscrapers, airplanes and trains, I told myself sometimes? Because we didn’t just build a machine that would do everything for us: we built machines to use, with the best of our intelligence, to bring us further. And that is exactly what Artists need to learn to do with AI: new incredible horizons are waiting.

It’s a nice story, no? Also since the alternative is that we are in the slaughterhouse of literature, and not in Moretti’s sense. In a much more fundamental sense.

As a computational linguist working on this topic since I was young, I have recently had one small chance of testing just this hypothesis in a controlled experimental set. We had a group of humans write a new narrative story with an AI: the human wrote a part, the AI wrote the next part, and so forth. Granted, almost no real literature is made this way; but it’s a start to keep aleatory variables intentionally to a minimum: the experimental constraints must be rigid. A control group of only humans did the same in pairs of two, writer-to-writer; and a control group of only AIs did the same as well. My cherished theory: the best will be human-AI collaboration. Some colleagues and friends preferred another theory: the best will come from human-human collaborations.

I will keep the technicalities to the minimum, but we had other humans read and evaluate the stories along dimensions of quality, enjoyment, coherence, polish, and so forth, and we contrasted them with a large battery of linguistic and narrative features we computed directly from the hybrid stories.

Well, human-AI collaboration failed all the time. It did not score highest on originality, quality, enjoyment, or coherence. It was just a bad compromise.

So did the human-human collaborations still hold the palm, in spite of all the tech’s advancements? No. The winners were the machines, solo. Stories written by machine collaborating with each other resulted, to the human eye, of higher quality and better style, holding more surprising associations and a more polished prose.

Human collaborations still got a winning wing, though: they were, consistently, the most original and enjoyable: dirty, brilliant, confused and fun.

Collaboration between us and the machines did not improve both groups of traits: it made them collapse and fall.

Now, this was a small pilot. The stories were few, the writers were pressed to hurry, the conditions were unnatural and the annotators didn’t agree all the time. So, after all, there is no point for big conclusions: experiments, to be solid, must be slow and repeated.

But what if keep doing this and the results keep coming the same? Scientists around the world are already building fully automated laboratories, replicas of themselves that devise theories, make experiments, look at results and think of the next step: the work of a researcher. It used to be a high intellectual skill, but now the human is in the way. Human activity does not make the machine go farther: it just slows it down. What if the same happens for artistic writing? Should we stand by and make way to the hyper-Dantes of the inhuman future?

Perhaps. I am unsure what to think myself. When I think of some humans, I consider it cannot but bring some goodness if we lose the cherished crown of the ‘best’. When I think of others, I have a sense of melancholy. And when I think of myself? Failed writer, mediocre researcher, and soon jobless loser. What is for me to hope most? Not much. Except for one thing: I don’t think my own experiment closes the door, and a thousand similar results wouldn’t either. If you measured who runs faster between a human on a horse, a train, and a human trying to ride a train like a horse, the result would be obvious. It’s not the point of trains, and yet trains don’t make humans useless. Perhaps we are looking at the wrong things. The new ways of doing art will not look anything like the old ones, but they don’t have to be deterior or despairing: they just have to be different. And we can think of the right way of making them work for us. To make our power of expressions louder, and not muffled. After all, we still have a parcel of natural inventiveness.

So you have learned nothing from this experiment?, you will ask. You are back at your old story.

Yeah. I don’t like the results. I prefer not to be convinced by them. But I am reporting them anyway.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" No coming home before sunrise.

I got out with a backpack and my computer, but they were unnecessary. A friend, N, called me and invited me over to a flat downtown where she was drinking with two friends and I went. A Danish woman and her Iranian boyfriend, together with N they had already emptied four bottles and had opened the fifth. She studies children literature and has a lot of books: she worked as an editor. The house was nice, cozy, nordic and full of paintings, books and plants. These people are adults, unlike me.

“We are leaving for Oslo for good” said the woman with her charming eyes. “We are renting the house. N, do you want it?”

It’s cheaper and bigger and more central than N’s, and I could see my friend was tempted. She asked for a week to mull it over.

“Now let’s go out in the city”.

The Danish woman and the Iranian man shook their heads, and N and I went alone into the night. It was 2am.

At 2.30am we reached a 7 Eleven. A lot of people N knew kept coming in, all completely drunk. I was sober instead, and I felt lucid, serene and cold. They kept drinking and being weird and cute. I am sure they won’t remember a thing.

At 3am we got to a student bar. One of the last refuges in that part of the city. I told N that several doctors had recommended me to immediately go into the psyc ward, and I had refused. She already knew.

“I think you should go into the ward” she said.

“But I have so many things to do” I said. “Work, write, read, go to the gym, meet friends, kill myself”

“What was the last one?”

“Just a joke”

“Some jokes say the truth” she said.

“Anyway, I have too much to do”

“But this is more important” she said. “You should let them hold you”.

Then she told me of her youth: she had to move, since she was 1, from foster care to foster care. And then we moved again. We passed by buildings that used to be industries and now are cafes and wineries for digital nomads and at 4am we reached a bar, at the top of a long stairway, that is open all the time. This is the first area of Aarhus I saw when I arrived here with the woman who is now my ex.

N and I sat and talked while everyone around was drunk. People stopped and said things like “Where are you from” and “You look beautiful”. N is always beautiful but at that time of the night, at that level of intoxication, they found me beautiful as well. Maybe the place for me to live is 4am. For a moment, all seemed upside down: I was lucid while the others were clouded, and I was good looking too while the others made strange grimaces and walked slouched and pale.

5am arrived and the city got as bright as day. We left and walked through the empty streets. Seagulls were fighting over the canal. Nature was roaring, angry and alive. We waited for the tram. Every place had held us for an hour, I thought, no more, but somehow that had been enough to go through the whole darkness.

The tram arrived. The last container. We stepped in, and we watched the railway run in front of us, Westwards; anticipating the direction of the Sun.

Notturno

A chi sarebbe importato?

Aveva lavato i piatti e li aveva rimessi tutti a posto ben asciutti nell’armadio.

No, non sarebbe rimasta affatto.

Back to work

Days of slow change, and the future is a slight menace at the horizon.

Yuri

Days of slow change, and the future is a slight menace at the horizon.

So, in a city that’s hostile to pedestrians by design, I had to walk in very slow steps and sit down every quarter of an hour. In this way, I was able to gain a different perspective on this city that seems endless, devoid of center or boundaries. After all, it’s the immense city of all stories, tales, fiction and illusion. A center would be impossible.

Instead, like a library, it’s a vast collection of neighborhoods. Each neighborhood is a fiction: a remake of Korea, Italy, Japan, or another world; yet each neighborhood is alive, and therefore, in its own way, true, and evokes the dream of making it, of starting over, of telling one’s story, and of regenerating: Koreatown is the image of Korea that Korean immigrants have created; Little Italy is a story of Italy, the version reimagined by people who had left Italy to tell it to those who might remain in America for the rest of their lives. In Los Angeles, this phenomenon seems to take on universal proportions. Every part of the city is a story of something else, and in a certain sense, it is that thing’s second life, as a form of hope. Much of the Hollywood myth seems to rest, like the city itself, on this belief in the ability to write a new story for one’s life and to find the best light for that narrative: life as a movie. It creates a dizzying whirl of falsehoods, hypocrisy, and optical illusions (Calvino counts Los Angeles among the “nightmare cities”, and may be right). But there is something beautiful about this free, extraordinary reinvention of oneself, about this pervasive, cinematic vitality. It gives you a certain energy.

At the end of the day, I climbed to the top of Griffith Observatory, the great public observatory that a crazy billionaire envisioned at the beginning of last century. The entire vast expanse becomes an ocean of lights: somehow, as you climb, you reach the end of the endless city, opening yourself up to a high and infinite sky. By losing sight of all details, I was able to see the big frame. If I could do the same with my life, I might begin to write the script for the future and do a bit of editing on the past. My life lacks a center. But this city has no center and thrives nonetheless. My life pales in comparison to better, brighter lives, lives that are successful and moving forward with vigor. But everyone in Los Angeles is surrounded by the myth of success, of Hollywood, of that big something (an audition that opens doors or an extraordinary breakthrough) that happens to other people, to characters on screen. In Los Angeles, perhaps, my life is the norm.

Second day in Los Angeles

Beach day.

Yuri

Beach day. I’ll have to keep this short because I’m dying to sleep.

I went to Venice, the so-called “Santa Monica” area. If Los Angeles is the city of stories, Venice is the neighborhood of stories without happy endings: stories that go awry. In a huge hangar in this part of town, an engineer built the largest wooden airplane in history; it was supposed to usher in a new era of aviation, but it was too heavy. It made only one flight, the maiden flight, and remained in his hangar for decades, until it was dismantled. It flew, but it was just one flight. Or: just one flight, but it flew. The order changes the whole story.

Now the hangar is a data center for artificial intelligence, another impossible beast that, for now, is flying.

Venice itself was a true “Los Angelino” project. Another crazy billionaire (the city seems to produce them in droves) decided at the beginning of the 20th century to recreate Venice on full scale. A better version of Venice: a narrative version of Venice, its second life, free from the impurities of its first life. They dug the canals and created the islands. The idea was popular: if Venice is the city of dreams par excellence, I understand why Los Angeles would feel a certain attraction to it. But it can be difficult to turn a dream into a dream. Reality took over brutally. The area fell into disrepair and the canals rotted. The city eventually paved them over and turned them into streets, and now the area has been rebranded as a neighborhood for family homes. The dream foundered.

But the names remain: the entire, vast area is called Venice; and it’s full of Venice Road and Venice Boulevard. They are all that remains of Venice; the Venice that early 20th-century Los Angeles wanted to imagine.

On my way home, I dropped by a party for artists showcasing short excerpts from their performances, and I took the bus with a self-proclaimed writer born in San Diego. Twenty-three years ago he met a girl at Burning Man who said, “Come try your luck in Los Angeles!” The writer left his home and friends behind and came to LA to work in the video game industry. Now the girl seems to have vanished, luck is slow in coming, and in 2008 he lost his job due to the Great Recession. But he stays in shape and continues to write and promotes himself as a board game designer; he plays drums on the beach and sponsors local artistic activities. Three years ago, he broke his shoulder in a car accident. A stroke of luck, he explains: his shoulder had been giving him trouble for years, but he would have had to pay forty thousand dollars to get it fixed; thanks to the accident, insurance covered all the costs. At the hostel, a young man says he came to Los Angeles to try his luck and become a big, famous singer. For now, he’s lost his home and sleeps in his car or in small hostels, taking each day as it comes and betting on his big dream.

Hollywood, it seems, still works.

Ultimo giorno a Los Angeles

Torno a casa rimuginando.

Ora vado a dormire.

Secondo giorno a LA

Giorno di spiagge.

Yuri

Hollywood, a quanto pare, funziona ancora.

Los Angeles

bla bla bla

Yuri

bla bla bla
